Claire Bennett started out as a passing idea when I heard that Zachary Quinto (Sylar from the TV series 'Heroes') was going to be at Armageddon Wellington. I'm a big fan of the show, and Claire's cheerleaders outfit is so recognisable to fans. I was a little sad when they announced he couldn't make it, but as I had already started, I thought I may as well finish it and have some fun.
The top is a purchased white v-neck t-shirt. Getting the neckline to look nice takes time, and it's just easier/cheaper to buy one. I took the sleeves off, and drafted my own. Because I didn't want to bother with the fuss of trying to dye a knit and skirt fabric the same red colour, I just used red micro crepe for both. Bit tricky, making fitted sleeves out of a non-stretch material, but I think it worked okay. The hem needed shortening to sit at the right length for the skirt. I overlocked it and used a double needle to recreate the cover hem of the t-shirt. The Wildcats logo was originally a much smaller logo that I found online - Matt enlarged it with Photoshop, then he spent some time cleaning it up. We printed it out on some white t-shirt transfer paper I happened to have, then ironed it on.
The skirt started out as Simplicity 3689, which is a cheerleader's costume pattern. But screenshots show that the skirt is a wrap one - crossing over at the front. The Simplicity pattern is just a simple skirt, with a zip up the back, so I ended up changing it a lot. The back stayed mostly the same (took out the center back seam and zip, kept the darts), and redrew the front cross over sections to be two separate pieces. Took a little while to make sure I had the placement and angle of the cut out in the right place. Then sewed the skirt all together. The yellow and white trim is bias binding - took AGES making sure that was straight (doing one stitch at a time on my machine) - but I'm happy with the way it came out. The second row was harder, as I had to make sure the distance between the first was exactly the same all the way round. The skirt closes with a couple of skirt hooks along the top hem.
Bought a pair of white sports shoes off eBay and a blonde wig. It was my first time wearing a wig - a bit unusual, but I got used to it after a while. It's been a long time since I've had long hair. It was fun project, and it's very easy to wear.
Worn at - Armageddon Welllington 2009, Dragon*Con 2011.
